The Table Behind West Wind
Meet the friends building a Mahjong community in Southwest Kansas.
Meet Megan & Jami
Jami and Megan have worked together for years — first as President and Vice President of the Montezuma Chamber of Commerce, and now as the team behind West Wind Mahjong Society. Both are graduates of South Gray High School in Montezuma.
Jami owns and operates Montezuma Drug, and Megan serves as Marketing Director for MJE. They're longtime friends, and as women in business in their community, they've learned how to get things done — together.
How It Began
Why We Started
It started the way most good ideas do: with a conversation. Jami and Megan had been talking for months about wanting to learn Mahjong, so Jami took the plunge and held a class — co-sponsored by Montezuma Drug — as a way to give people something to look forward to during the long stretch of a Kansas winter. They learned to play, and that was it. Within a week, they were back at it in Megan's living room with a couple of friends, and they haven't stopped since.
Mahjong was new to Southwest Kansas, and they wanted as many people playing as possible. What started as a single class turned into a Society — built to spread a love of the game like wildfire across rural Kansas, one table at a time. A League is even in the works for this fall.
